When I buy Halloween candy, I always start eating it before the appointed day. Think of this blog like mental chocolate...we can start eating now and still enjoy it when we get together at the "Scary Quaker" conference for 10th to 12th grade youth on Oct 340 - Nov 1, 2009 at Powell House.
Let me say before we go any further that we still have about 10 slots for people to come as of Oct 15. Call your friends and tell them to get signed up!
"Some things are scarier than they first appear. Imagine a small group that has been imprisoned by the British, hung in Boston, infiltrated by the FBI, tracked by Homeland Security, and often invites people to hold hands at potluck suppers. Peaceful intent and non-violent action can be very powerful. Power that is not controlled by authorities can be scary to them. With both humor and introspection, we will look at some of the practices and beliefs that create power in ordinary people (Quakers, Catholics, Buddhists, Muslims, and many others) around the world."

30 women and children gathered in Pitt Hall to sing, dance and share stories. We were ably led by Annie Patterson. A gifted musician, Annie has played a central role in helping to create a quiet revolution of group singing in the U.S. She is co-creator, along with her husband, Peter Blood, of the popular songbook, Rise Up Singing. During that last 2 decades, Annie has honed her skills as a song leader, performing at many different venues throughout North America and around the world.

We had over 100 participants from toddlers to over 80 years old doing many different kinds of work. This photo represents one of the crews putting on the siding for the Anna Curtis Center. There was work done on the patio as well as building a bunk bed and cleaning up sticks and branches on the grounds. The smallest children were ably cared for by our childcare workers and colored Easter eggs Saturday afternoon. During the spring work weekend, one of the crews worked on the sprinkler house. Here you can see them putting plywood on the ceiling.

While the Powell House Committee was meeting in Pitt Hall, Clem and Mimi McGiver sided.

Clem brought his scaffolding which made it so much easier!

They kept at it all day on Saturday.
